A Story from Baltimore: When Hope Meets a Hungry Community

Dear Friends,

“Ministering to people is the heart and soul of what we do!

These were the first words we heard from Reverend Milton Williams, Jr., founder of The New Life Food Pantry in East Baltimore. After spending the day serving alongside him and his team, we saw firsthand how deeply those words ring true.

At New Life Food Pantry (NLFP), compassion isn’t just spoken—it’s lived. Every staff member welcomes guests with dignity, joy, and the love of Jesus. Their smiles are genuine, their hearts are open, and their presence brings comfort to those who may be encountering hope for the very first time.

Rev. Williams launched NLFP in 2016 with a clear vision: no family in East Baltimore should face hunger alone. The neighborhood is one of the most economically challenged communities in the region, and the need is great.

But their calling goes far beyond food distribution. The ministry now pours into the lives of individuals facing homelessness, addiction, food insecurity, and the heavy responsibility of raising grandchildren on limited incomes. With each person who walks through their doors, the team chooses to love deeply and serve faithfully. Today, NLFP serves 500–600 people a day, three days a week.

Inside their vibrant outreach center, guests are invited to choose what they need—frozen meats, fresh produce, dairy, beverages, toiletries, and essential household items. That simple act of choosing helps restore a sense of dignity, reminding each person that they are seen, valued, and worthy.

Rev. Williams also founded the New Life Evangelical Church and Turning Point Clinic, extending support through addiction recovery programs that include medication, counseling, mental health care, and spiritual guidance.

On the morning of our visit, the day began with a time of prayer and an altar call. More than ten people stepped forward to accept Jesus—a reminder that this ministry is nourishing both body and soul.

Then came a moment that deeply moved us: Rev. Williams began calling guests to the food line by age. When he invited those 90 and older to come forward, five seniors stepped out of the crowd. Five! It was a powerful illustration of the deep need within Baltimore’s community.

Throughout the day, the team served:

  • 400 sandwiches
  • 10 gallons of coffee
  • 11 pounds of sugar
  • Two roaster pans of soup
  • Half a pan of oatmeal

Each item represented more than a meal—it represented care, compassion, and connection.
