Counting Blessings: A Story of Impact
“I first met Kaylee at the warming center at New Life Church in Somerset on a very cold night in January. The warming center received an overflowing amount of freezing and hungry people. The donated meal that was provided was devoured and I needed to pick up any additional meals from any restaurants that could provide. My son works at a fast food place and I told him the demand, and bags were filled with chicken nuggets and fries. Pizza was ordered beforehand and that too was gone. As I sorted out the nuggets, a little blonde-haired girl came around the counter and looked up at me with these sorrowful eyes. In a soft voice, she asked if she could have some chicken nuggets. Her short blonde hair was unruly and her clothes were very worn and dirty. I was overwhelmed with emotion and I held back tears. I handed her a white plastic bowl filled with fries and chicken nuggets and her dirty little hands reached out for the offering.“
“As she humbly ate her warm food, I sat on the cot next to her. I learned that the father was partially blind and had trouble getting a job. I learned that they came from another county where their shelter had to close and were brought here for the first time. This family did not even have a vehicle and I found that they were living in an abandoned shack using a small kerosene heater to try to stay warm. The volunteer asked her name. She responded, ‘Kaylee.’”
