Every month, Blessings of Hope sends a semi load of food to Philadelphia, PA, where we partner with the Allegheny West Foundation to distribute food to the hungry and homeless. The line reaches down the street and around the block. No one seems to mind. There are empty grocery bags and personal shopping carts ready to be filled and somewhere down the line music is playing. At one point, our team thought a dance off was going to break out right there on the street. Just knowing at the front of the line there would be fresh produce, meat, eggs, bread and so much more, set an atmosphere of hope.
‘Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.’ Matthew 25:37-40 KJV
In a circumstance that could have been humiliating and even desperate, there was a strong sense of community and generosity. This is our goal at Blessings of Hope–to see the hungry fed, to give the hurting hope and to see a sense of community rise above a sense of despair.
